How to Make Your Own Battery-Powered Gadget Chargers

With a few AA batteries and $5 worth of parts, anybody can cobble together an emergency cell phone charger. Here's how to do it, and how to extend your charger-building skills to work on digital cameras, laptops and even power tools.

There’s no magic to a cell phone charger. It’s really little more than a plastic-wrapped strip of copper wire designed to deliver power (stepped down in voltage and converted to DC, of course) from an outlet to your phone battery.

So if an emergency strikes and you find yourself without either your charger or a working wall outlet, it’s really pretty easy to MacGyver together a contraption that uses AA batteries to quickly give your phone enough juice to make a few emergency calls. The whole process, which is a lot like a miniature version of jump-starting a car, takes minutes and uses parts that can be found at Radio Shack for less than $5.

To do it yourself, you’ll need the following: a few AA batteries, a four-AA-battery tray, a metal paper clip and two alligator clips. That’s it, and the finished product should be able to charge just about any phone (with the notable exception of the iPhone, which does not have an easily removable battery) if you find yourself in the wilderness or waiting out a power outage.

Check the voltage

The first step is to check the voltage on your phone battery. Most clock in at about 3.7 volts, but you should pop it out of the phone and read the fine print to see for sure. This information will let you calculate how many AA batteries you need. The key is to use enough to barely exceed the phone battery’s voltage. Employ fewer and you won’t be producing enough juice to charge the battery, but hook up too many and you could burn out the whole thing. AA batteries are 1.5 volts each, so charging a 3.7-volt battery requires combining three of them for a total of 4.5 volts.

AP IMPACT: Statisticians reject global cooling

Have you heard that the world is now cooling instead of warming? You may have seen some news reports on the Internet or heard about it from a provocative new book. Only one problem: It's not true, according to an analysis of the numbers done by several independent statisticians for The Associated Press.

The case that the Earth might be cooling partly stems from recent weather. Last year was cooler than previous years. It's been a while since the super-hot years of 1998 and 2005. So is this a longer climate trend or just weather's normal ups and downs?

In a blind test, the AP gave temperature data to four independent statisticians and asked them to look for trends, without telling them what the numbers represented. The experts found no true temperature declines over time.

"If you look at the data and sort of cherry-pick a micro-trend within a bigger trend, that technique is particularly suspect," said John Grego, a professor of statistics at the University of South Carolina.

Yet the idea that things are cooling has been repeated in opinion columns, a BBC news story posted on the Drudge Report and in a new book by the authors of the best-seller "Freakonomics." Last week, a poll by the Pew Research Center found that only 57 percent of Americans now believe there is strong scientific evidence for global warming, down from 77 percent in 2006.

Global warming skeptics base their claims on an unusually hot year in 1998. Since then, they say, temperatures have dropped — thus, a cooling trend. But it's not that simple.

Since 1998, temperatures have dipped, soared, fallen again and are now rising once more. Records kept by the British meteorological office and satellite data used by climate skeptics still show 1998 as the hottest year. However, data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA show 2005 has topped 1998. Published peer-reviewed scientific research generally cites temperatures measured by ground sensors, which are from NOAA, NASA and the British, more than the satellite data.

The recent Internet chatter about cooling led NOAA's climate data center to re-examine its temperature data. It found no cooling trend.

"The last 10 years are the warmest 10-year period of the modern record," said NOAA climate monitoring chief Deke Arndt. "Even if you analyze the trend during that 10 years, the trend is actually positive, which means warming."

The AP sent expert statisticians NOAA's year-to-year ground temperature changes over 130 years and the 30 years of satellite-measured temperatures preferred by skeptics and gathered by scientists at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Statisticians who analyzed the data found a distinct decades-long upward trend in the numbers, but could not find a significant drop in the past 10 years in either data set. The ups and downs during the last decade repeat random variability in data as far back as 1880.

Saying there's a downward trend since 1998 is not scientifically legitimate, said David Peterson, a retired Duke University statistics professor and one of those analyzing the numbers.

Identifying a downward trend is a case of "people coming at the data with preconceived notions," said Peterson, author of the book "Why Did They Do That? An Introduction to Forensic Decision Analysis."

One prominent skeptic said that to find the cooling trend, the 30 years of satellite temperatures must be used. The satellite data tends to be cooler than the ground data. And key is making sure 1998 is part of the trend, he added.

It's what happens within the past 10 years or so, not the overall average, that counts, contends Don Easterbrook, a Western Washington University geology professor and global warming skeptic.

"I don't argue with you that the 10-year average for the past 10 years is higher than the previous 10 years," said Easterbrook, who has self-published some of his research. "We started the cooling trend after 1998. You're going to get a different line depending on which year you choose.

"Should not the actual temperature be higher now than it was in 1998?" Easterbrook asked. "We can play the numbers games."

That's the problem, some of the statisticians said.

Grego produced three charts to show how choosing a starting date can alter perceptions. Using the skeptics' satellite data beginning in 1998, there is a "mild downward trend," he said. But doing that is "deceptive."

The trend disappears if the analysis starts in 1997. And it trends upward if you begin in 1999, he said.

Apart from the conflicting data analyses is the eyebrow-raising new book title from Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, "Super Freakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance."

A line in the book says: "Then there's this little-discussed fact about global warming: While the drumbeat of doom has grown louder over the past several years, the average global temperature during that time has in fact decreased."

That led to a sharp rebuke from the Union of Concerned Scientists, which said the book mischaracterizes climate science with "distorted statistics."

Levitt, a University of Chicago economist, said he does not believe there is a cooling trend. He said the line was just an attempt to note the irony of a cool couple of years at a time of intense discussion of global warming. Levitt said he did not do any statistical analysis of temperatures, but "eyeballed" the numbers and noticed 2005 was hotter than the last couple of years. Levitt said the "cooling" reference in the book title refers more to ideas about trying to cool the Earth artificially.

Statisticians say that in sizing up climate change, it's important to look at moving averages of about 10 years. They compare the average of 1999-2008 to the average of 2000-2009. In all data sets, 10-year moving averages have been higher in the last five years than in any previous years.

"To talk about global cooling at the end of the hottest decade the planet has experienced in many thousands of years is ridiculous," said Ken Caldeira, a climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution at Stanford.

Ben Santer, a climate scientist at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Lab, called it "a concerted strategy to obfuscate and generate confusion in the minds of the public and policymakers" ahead of international climate talks in December in Copenhagen.

President Barack Obama weighed in on the topic Friday at MIT. He said some opponents "make cynical claims that contradict the overwhelming scientific evidence when it comes to climate change — claims whose only purpose is to defeat or delay the change that we know is necessary."

Earlier this year, climate scientists in two peer-reviewed publications statistically analyzed recent years' temperatures against claims of cooling and found them not valid.

Not all skeptical scientists make the flat-out cooling argument.

"It pretty much depends on when you start," wrote John Christy, the Alabama atmospheric scientist who collects the satellite data that skeptics use. He said in an e-mail that looking back 31 years, temperatures have gone up nearly three-quarters of a degree Fahrenheit (four-tenths of a degree Celsius). The last dozen years have been flat, and temperatures over the last eight years have declined a bit, he wrote.

Oceans, which take longer to heat up and longer to cool, greatly influence short-term weather, causing temperatures to rise and fall temporarily on top of the overall steady warming trend, scientists say. The biggest example of that is El Nino.

El Nino, a temporary warming of part of the Pacific Ocean, usually spikes global temperatures, scientists say. The two recent warm years, both 1998 and 2005, were El Nino years. The flip side of El Nino is La Nina, which lowers temperatures. A La Nina bloomed last year and temperatures slipped a bit, but 2008 was still the ninth hottest in 130 years of NOAA records.

Of the 10 hottest years recorded by NOAA, eight have occurred since 2000, and after this year it will be nine because this year is on track to be the sixth-warmest on record.

The current El Nino is forecast to get stronger, probably pushing global temperatures even higher next year, scientists say. NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt predicts 2010 may break a record, so a cooling trend "will be never talked about again."

FRUIT

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.

In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining - every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet etc - actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!

Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will not happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the Secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

But eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.

APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.

STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer-causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.

ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.

WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene - the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.

GUAVA & PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content. Guava is also rich in fiber, which helps prevent constipation. Papaya is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.

Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can you believe this? For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you. It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup, warm water or warm beer after a me al.

A serious note about heart attacks HEART ATTACK PROCEDURE': (THIS IS NOT A JOKE!) Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurti ng.. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack . Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive...

Housing: Best Recovery Bets

1. San Francisco
Median home price: $675,000
Value lost since 2006: 25.7%
Forecast gain by 2011*: 4.8%

The San Francisco metro area has seen its home values drop by a quarter, and the city still has some pain to work through. The city's median home price is expected fall another 8.3% by June 2010.

After that, however, the market there may come roaring back: Fiserv predicts a 14.3% gain between June 2010 and June 2011. Averaged out, that means a 4.8% gain over the next two years.

One reason for the sharp comeback is that much of the area's excess inventory will have been sold. It's already dropped by nearly in half over the past year.

The recovery will be delayed, though, as the area -- particularly Oakland and the East Bay -- works through its foreclosure problems. During the first six months of 2009, one of every 52 homes had at least one foreclosure filing.

The good news, according to Mark Fleming, chief economist for First American CoreLogic, is that core city neighborhoods don't have nearly as many foreclosures as those out on the fringe. The steady demand in those communities will serve as a base as other neighborhoods rebuild.

2. Seattle
Median home price: $371,000
Value lost since 2006: 15.2%
Forecast gain by 2011*: 3.8%

Seattle has become a world-class city with a diverse, vibrant economy. As a home to manufacturers such as Boeing and software providers such as Microsoft, the job market has held up better than average, with a current unemployment rate of 8.8%.

Home prices had a softer landing as well, dropping just 15.2% over the past three years, about half the national average. However, prices do tend to be volatile, according to Mark Fleming, chief economist for First American CoreLogic. The lack of available land for development is one reason for that volatility, as are political restrictions on growth.

After another modest price decline of 2.3% in the next eight months, the market should begin to turn up. Between June 2010 and June 2011, the city should see a gain of 6.2%. Averaged out, that means a 3.8% gain over the next two years*.

And while that may not sound all that robust for those jaded by the annual double-digit returns recorded during the boom, that performance will be one of the best of any large city during that period.

3. Pittsburgh
Median home price: $122,000
Value lost since 2006: 0.8%
Forecast gain by 2011*: 2.2%

Pittsburgh's main problem has been a brain drain. The metro area has been losing residents for years: Its population shrank 3% since the 2000 census, and the core city of Pittsburgh has lost almost half its population over the past 50 years. But that worked in Pittsburgh's favor when it came to real estate. There was no shortage of housing during the boom years, which helped keep a heavy lid on housing prices. Homebuyers never had to resort to exotic mortgages just to buy a starter place.

There are few barriers to entry for homebuyers here, according to Mark Fleming, chief economist for First American CoreLogic. As a result, Pittsburgh's foreclosure rate has been running at about half the national average.

Meanwhile, the area's economy has transitioned from steel to services, finance, bio-med, health care and other more sustainable industries. This diversification has enabled the area to muddle through the recession with less angst than many other places. "It's where we would like to see Detroit go through over the next decade," said Fleming. The unemployment rate for the metro area is a modest 7.9%.

Once the national recovery begins in earnest, the housing market should start to record moderate gains. Fiserv predicts a home price rise of 0.5% by June 2010 followed by a 1.7% increase in the following 12 months. Averaged out, that means a 2.2% gain over the next two years.*

Lose your job, keep your home

Few words sting like the ones that inform you that you're being laid off — especially today, with jobs so hard to come by. If you're a homeowner, the blow of a job loss can be even worse.

In households with more than one wage earner, halving the monthly income can severely stretch a budget. And in households where there's one breadwinner, having zero income can be devastating. A rainy-day fund helps, but it's important to craft a plan early about how you're going to get through the rough patch.

More people are facing this nightmare today: While the volume of subprime mortgages headed to foreclosure is falling, the volume of prime, fixed-rate mortgages defaulting is on the rise, according to statistics from the Mortgage Bankers Association.

"If you don't have the prescribed three to six months income in the bank (now eight to 12 months due to how long it takes to replace that job), you're really in deep trouble with some troubling decisions to make," said Gail Cunningham, vice president of public relations for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, in an e-mail. The NFCC is a national, nonprofit credit-counseling network.

How to Get a Job That Doesn't Exist

Step 1: Find a company you know you can help
I had Lisa research several companies that she knew she could help with their PR. Her job was to identify ones A) that could seriously benefit from a PR campaign, and B) for which she got really excited about building a campaign. In doing so, Lisa learned the first rule to connecting with a potential employer: Figure out specifically how you can add value to their organization (i.e. make them more money, or save them money). Lisa found three places in town she felt certain she could help. In fact, she had completed several internships in school and felt confident she could use what she learned to achieve similar results for these companies.

Step 2: Forget a cover letter; build your pitch letter
Since these companies weren't actively hiring, a cover letter and résumé weren't going to get Lisa in the door. Instead, she needed to create a pitch, something she learned as a PR major, to get the employer to see how she could help. In this letter, she offered to do a specific PR campaign for the company. She outlined how many hours it would take her to complete, what she intended to accomplish and what she would normally charge per hour to do this. Then, she explained she would like to offer this service for free in exchange for a reference or future consideration for hire. She also mentioned if they were truly pleased with the results and wanted to pay her something at the end, she would leave it up to them as to what they thought would be fair compensation. Then she printed it up, along with her résumé, and dropped them off in person at each establishment.

Step 3: Be patient and persistent
While job seekers' main priority is getting an employer to contact them, they have to remember the employer is busy with other things. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean they should give up after one try.

In sales, they say the average number of contacts it takes to make a sale is nine. It actually makes sense. How many times does it take us to meet with someone before we feel really comfortable that we know them well? And yet, how many job seekers actually stay in touch with an employer they'd like to work for long enough to make that happen?

At the same time, you don't want to be pushy. The key is to check back every so often, adding more value each time you do. For example, a week after Lisa dropped off her proposal, she followed up with an e-mail to each place, sharing some links to articles regarding the value of PR programs to companies like theirs. This action prompted one of them to contact her.

Step 4: Confirm the details of the offer and set expectations
Lisa set up a meeting with the company's owner. In that meeting, she was able to stress again that payment could be in the form of a reference or consideration for future employment, or they could pay her what they thought was fair. They chose the days and times she would come into the office to complete the work (she actually had a part-time waitressing job that was paying the bills), and also identified whom she would connect with in the office (the equivalent to a manager) to get answers to questions and gain feedback on her work to ensure it exceeded their expectations. The owner accepted the terms and she started immediately.

I'm sure you all can imagine what happened next. During the project, Lisa got to know the owner and his staff better, since the work required her to engage with them. They were impressed with her enthusiasm and her ability to work in their environment. By the time she was done with the project, she had a job offer. One of the other companies she had pitched also called her at that point and asked to meet her, but she opted to take the full-time job instead.

  ABOUT:

Mind-Boggling Optical Illusions

If you’ve ever felt like you go a little cross-eyed after taking a peek at an optical illusion, then you know they can be a pretty intense phenomenon. What your eyes perceive when looking at one of these images is actually a visual illusion; you see the image as something different than what it is because the different cells and receptors in your eyes distinguish images and colors at dissimilar speeds. The eye can only receive a limited amount of visual stimuli, but as your brain constantly processes the visual information, it gives you the illusion of continuous sight. Whether it’s an optical, physiological or cognitive illusion, the design plays a trick on your eyes (and mind). Check out some of the interesting illusions below—but beware, you may not be able to absorb them all in one sitting.

我们来做个比赛,你就试着追我吧,如果跑不过我,你就给我乖乖离开这;

Subject:
Date: 16 May 2006

Great Coastal Drives

Round trip from Hanga Roa
About 25 miles

Peeling off from the main road that bisects Easter Island is an easy-to-overlook spur to the south. The island's south coastal road skirts the Pacific Ocean, taking you past the best of the moai, mysterious stone heads that stand up to 40 feet tall and still baffle anthropologists. There are more than a dozen notable archaeological sites along the route, but the most impressive is Ahu Tongariki: Ponder the perfect line of 15 massive heads standing like sentinels guarding the coast. Just off the road is Rano Raraku, a quarry where some of the unfinished moai appear to be resting, their expressionless faces staring at the sky, waiting to be set upright.

World's most expensive cruise ship

After five years of planning and construction, Royal Caribbean is unveiling the Oasis of the Seas, a $1.4 billion ship that will be the largest and tallest cruise liner in the world when it takes its maiden voyage this December.

At 1,184 feet from stem to stern, it's nearly as long as the Empire State building is tall--while rivaling the amenities of any world-class Las Vegas resort. A crew of roughly 2,160 will man 18 decks and tend to 5,400 passengers (assuming two per room).

Ways You Put Yourself at Risk for Swine Flu

Worrying too much
Panicking about getting sick can make you just that—sick. It's easy to get carried away, with all the hype about the scary swine flu virus; however, it's important to look at things in perspective. Overall, H1N1 has not proven to be anymore of a threat than the regular seasonal flu, and most people who do catch the virus fully recover.

Hugging, kissing, and shaking hands
What's so dangerous about a simple handshake? Close contact with infected individuals is one of the easiest ways to pick up a virus. That doesn't mean you should be antisocial all flu season long, but you should be aware of possible transmission opportunities. If you are in a situation where physical hellos or good-byes are necessary, try not to touch your mouth or eyes afterward until you can wash your hands.

Smoking
Smoking cigarettes weakens the tiny disease-fighting hairs tucked inside nasal passages and the lungs, which trap and dispose of germs. This can leave your body more susceptible to attack. Plus, research shows that H1N1 burrows deeper into the lungs than seasonal flu, leading to infections that may be more severe than those caused by the latter.
Pascal James Imperato, MD, the dean of the School of Public Health at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, in Brooklyn, warns that prior lung damage, such as that caused by smoking, can leave you at greater risk of serious complications as well. "Chronic smokers are always much more vulnerable to severe viral infections of the respiratory type," he says. "They have damaged lungs, so they are more susceptible to coming down with illnesses and developing pneumonias following them."

Hitting the gym too hard
Some behaviors that in moderate amounts keep you healthy can actually weaken your immune system when taken to the extreme. For example, overexercising can leave your body struggling to cope with added physical stress—especially if you're not sleeping, hydrating, and fueling your body adequately. Unfortunately, the gym is also a great place to pick up viruses, from the sweaty treadmill to the benches in the locker room; plus, germs likely even catch a ride home on your gym bag.
We're not saying you should skip out on exercise: When done right, it will keep your immune system strong against the flu. But to protect yourself, wipe down machines before using them and take your own mat for stretching—or cover a borrowed one with a towel. Shower with soap and water immediately after working out to help kill any germs you may have been exposed to.

Workers in Brazil, Lithuania receive most vacation days

Here's one reason to move to Lithuania: Eight weeks of time off.

Workers in the Baltic state tied with Brazil for the most days off in the world: a whopping 41 a year, according to a report released Wednesday by global consulting firm Mercer.

"People take a lot of time, especially in the summer, because a lot of them own places outside the cities, in villages and by the sea," said Dina Kopilevic, a Lithuanian citizen working for the consulate in New York. "We take it for granted, probably."

In Lithuania, the minimum annual leave is 28 days plus 13 public holidays. Brazil has a statutory minimum of 30 vacation days plus 11 public holidays.

Ade Umhey is from Belo Horizonte, a city in southeastern Brazil, but is working temporarily in upstate New York. She said that in her country, there's a real appreciation for time spent outside of work.

"Being with family and friends is important," she explained. "You spend weekends dancing, going to clubs and barbecuing." Workers also take extended vacations at the beach or to other parts of the country, she said.

"It's a healthier attitude, because even though you don't work as long, you do work hard and then you get great time off."

Employees in Finland, France and Russia post a close second in time off, thanks to 40 vacation days and holidays.

Meanwhile, U.S. workers receive 25 days total. Although vacation policies vary widely, according to Mercer, many businesses in the U.S. give employees only 15 days, or three weeks of vacation, plus 10 holidays a year.

Employees in Singapore also get 25 days, while Chinese employees get 21 and Canadian employees only get 19. Excluding public holidays, workers in Canada and China each get just 10 days, the lowest allotment of any countries in Mercer's study.

Anthony Brown, a Canadian citizen who currently works in New York, argued that the lack of time off there is mitigated by other pluses. "The social benefits, including both welfare and unemployment benefits, should be factored in," he said. "Maybe there are fewer days but in reality you get paid a lot more for doing a lot less."

In addition to annual leave and public holidays, employers in some countries are also required by law to give additional leave for special circumstances such as getting married, having a baby or bereavement.

The Mercer report was based on mandatory vacation time for an employee working five days a week after 10 years service.

H1N1 flu causes unusual damage to lungs

Two studies published in the American Journal of Roentgenology show the need to check X-rays and CT scans for unusual features, and also point out swine flu can be tricky to diagnose in some of the sickest patients.

H1N1 flu is causing a pandemic, and while it is not particularly deadly, it is sickening many younger adults and older children who usually escape the worst effects of seasonal flu.

"It is therefore essential that clinicians be able to recognize possible cases of pandemic H1N1 influenza in high-risk groups so that they order the appropriate diagnostic tests, begin specific antiviral therapy, and prepare to provide intensive supportive measures as needed," Dr. Daniel Mollura of the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Maryland and colleagues wrote.

One middle-aged man who died was not diagnosed until after death, but unusual findings on his X-rays may be able to help doctors save other, similar patients.

Mollura's team found irregularities called ground-glass opacities in the patient's lungs using a CT scan. Although the patient was severely ill and had a fever, he tested negative for flu and doctors did not treat him for it.

The man died five days after he went into the hospital and the autopsy confirmed he had swine flu. The lung lesions seen on his CT scan matched lung damage done by the virus, Mollura and colleagues said.

In another study in the same journal, CT scans of patients with severe cases of swine flu showed many had pulmonary emboli, which block the arteries in the lungs, a team at the University of Michigan found.

Anticoagulant drugs can break up these clots and save lives.

Dr. Prachi Agarwal and colleagues examined 66 patients diagnosed with H1N1, 14 of them who were in the intensive care unit. All 66 got standard X-rays, which can show if a patient has pneumonia.

They performed enhanced X-rays known as computed tomography or CT scans on 15 of the patients, 10 of them who were in the ICU on ventilators to help them breathe. Five of the ICU patients had the blood clots in the lungs, Agarwal reported

"Our study suggests that patients who are severely ill with H1N1 are also at risk for developing pulmonary emboli, which should be carefully sought for on contrast-enhanced CT scans," Agarwal said in a statement.

"The majority of patients undergoing chest X-rays with H1N1 have normal radiographs (X-rays)," she added. Pulmonary emboli are also not normally seen in flu, she said.

"CT scans proved valuable in identifying those patients at risk of developing more serious complications as a possible result of the H1N1 virus, and for identifying a greater extent of disease than is appreciated on chest radiographs."

A:她:“老公。

  「xxxx!

When the Icing on the Cake Spells Disaster

SOMEONE who decorates cakes for a living should possess certain skills. Spelling is an important one. For example, success is not quite as sweet when the inscription reads, “Contralulation’s Ronan.” An eye for color helps, too. Piped dark brown swirls are never a good idea on a cake dotted with plastic farm animals. Finally, a few words about customer service: When someone requests that nothing be written on the cake, “NOTHING” should not be written on the cake.

For those working outside these margins, there is Cake Wrecks, Jen Yates’s popular blog and new book of the same name (Andrews McMeel, $12.99), celebrating the folly of professional confections gone horribly, horribly wrong. Think of them as epic fails, with frosting. There are Hello Kitty cakes that look more like gerbils with glandular problems, fondant ribbons gnarled into hideous nests, and squishy inscriptions that read, “Happy 3th Birthday, Evan.” As Ms. Yates, 31, defines it, a Cake Wreck is “any cake that is unintentionally sad, silly, creepy, inappropriate — you name it.”

“I can’t get my brain around what’s happening in bakeries out there, but something very wonky is going on,” Ms. Yates said by telephone recently. “Wonky” is a favorite term on her site, as in the wonky Curious George cake that looks more like Jo-Jo the Dog-Faced Boy. Sometimes, the wonkiness lies in the sentiment being expressed, as in the cake inscribed, “Sorry for all those things we said.”

Then there was the wonky miscommunication that started it all. In May 2008, a friend e-mailed Ms. Yates a photo of a sheet cake that looked like a prop from “The Office.” It was not. Amid marzipan flowers, the cursive inscription was a profound reminder of the perils of ordering supermarket cakes by phone.

I was fired for being too fat

If you asked people at random to describe Filippa Hamilton in a word, you’d hear a lot of synonyms for “gorgeous.” What you wouldn’t hear is “fat.”

And yet the 5-foot-10-inch, 120-pound model says that is essentially why she was fired by Ralph Lauren after eight years with the fashion designer.

“They said I couldn’t fit in their clothes anymore,” the size 4 stunner told TODAY’s Ann Curry Wednesday in New York. Hamilton said that Lauren wrote a letter to her agent saying, “We’re terminating your services because you don’t fit into the sample clothes that you need to wear.”

College After 50

The recession has hit older workers harder than anyone else. According to a study by the AARP, 9 percent of Americans ages 45 and older have lost their jobs in the past year (versus 5.12 percent in 2008) and a whopping 31 percent expect to lose theirs in the next 12 months.

On top of experiencing a higher unemployment rate, older workers spend longer in between jobs -- 22 weeks on average versus 15 weeks for employees ages 20 to 24, according to recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Joblessness alone wouldn't be as big a problem, says Kevin Seibert, managing director of the International Foundation for Retirement Education, if the population had a little longer to wait for their 401Ks to bounce back.

"That's really what's killing older workers," he says. "They need the money they've spent a lifetime saving and right now, it's just not there."

Even in the face of such abysmal statistics, there's still hope, says Jeanette Woodward, author of "Finding a Job After 50: Reinvent Yourself for the 21st Century." While employers may be shutting doors, a bevy of new scholarships and programs designed for later-in-life career changers are opening new ones.

"A lot more money is being put into new job training programs," says Woodward. "There's stimulus money and there's some state money, some local, some nonprofit. People over 50 are the hardest hit, but there are lots of opportunities, some of which aren't being explored."

Those opportunities include state and federal funds for job retraining. Currently all dislocated workers are eligible for free job counseling and education workshops through their local One-Stop Career Center. Thanks to the Trade Adjustment Act, workers affected by mass layoffs and those in industries including farming and manufacturing, who may permanently lose their jobs to overseas competition, are also eligible for up to 104 weeks of paid occupational training.

What experienced workers can do to retrain for new careers

Thanks to the Trade Adjustment Act, workers affected by mass layoffs and those in industries including farming and manufacturing, who may permanently lose their jobs to overseas competition, are also eligible for up to 104 weeks of paid occupational training.

In addition to helping laid-off employees find a new career path, these federally-funded centers also provide information on what type of education they'll need to get started in new job markets and contacts with colleges and vocational institutions in the area.

Older workers may also be able to score discounts on career retraining through tuition waivers for dislocated workers and senior citizens at both two- and four-year institutions.

A third avenue is to check out career-transition programs designed specifically for workers who bring a wealth of job experience to the table, says Nancy K. Schlossberg, a former professor of psychology at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., and author of "Revitalizing Retirement: Reshaping Your Identity, Relationships, and Purpose."

"National groups like Encore Careers can help you figure out what kinds of fields are looking for workers," Schlossberg says. "There are a number of programs at the community college level that can help older workers transition."

Designed to help workers with job experience transition into critical needs fields, "encore career" programs provide accelerated education tracks to help career changers move into fields such as nursing and teaching without going back for a full bachelor's degree.

Starting over from the bottom
Those who don't head straight to school may have to take a step backwards before they can move forward. Jeff Spilman, managing partner of S3 Entertainment Group in Ferndale, runs the largest film training and production services company in Michigan, a place where many workers come to start second careers.

"The bulk of our students are over 40 and that's good because they know what it's like to have a job and be responsible," says Spilman. "The negative side is that these people have to do internships to break into the field too. Usually our students do one, two or three internships to figure out where they want to go."

Volunteering can also mean a break into a new profession. When Dorothy Wilhelm went from U.S. Army wife to working mother of six at age 48, she worked for free before she got paid.

"I had no job experience, so I went to a very small radio station in Tacoma [Wash.] and told them, 'You have no women on your staff. I can start Monday' and I did. I got up every day at 5[a.m.] to do my show then went to work as a religious education director at a local church. It was hard, but I had to get my foot in the door."

Wilhelm, 76, now holds a degree from Marylhurst University just outside of Portland, Ore., and produces and hosts the Comcast On Demand show, "Never Too Late." She credits her success to the fact that she wasn't afraid to start out at the bottom and take a non-traditional approach to breaking into the field.

"At this time the obvious front door to the business you're interested in is probably clogged with job seekers," she says. "There is no question that they're hiring younger, but we're smarter and we're better workers. The opportunities are there for our generation, you just have to be crafty about it."

How To: Iron a Dress Shirt

1.Iron the collar
Start with the underside of the collar, working from the center out to the points to avoid creasing. Flip the shirt over, and repeat on the outside of the collar.

2.Iron the shoulders
Secure one shoulder over the narrow end of the board and iron from the yoke (the point where the collar meets the arm and the body of the shirt) to the center of the back. Repeat on the other shoulder.

3.Iron the cuffs and sleeves
Lay one sleeve flat on the board with buttons or cuff-link holes facing up. Iron the inside of the cuff first, then flip the sleeve over to iron the outside of the cuff. Next, iron the sleeve, beginning with the front side. Repeat with the other sleeve.

4.Iron the front and back
Iron both front panels, then flip the shirt over and iron the back. Use a spritz of water for any stubborn wrinkles.

5.Iron between the buttons
Next, tackle the placket (the panel where the buttons are). Take care to iron between the buttons; ironing over them can break buttons or scratch your iron's plate.

How To: Pack a Suitcase

1.Gather your clothes
Gather all the garments you may need on your trip, then edit down your choices so you don’t overpack—a common mistake. Put back at least half of the items you think you need.

2.Roll your clothes
Tightly roll softer, wrinkle-resistant garments, like T-shirts and cotton pants, and place them along the base of the bag. Jeans should be rolled, too.

3.Place folded items on top
Next, fold stiffer and/or wrinkle-prone garments like starched cotton shirts and blazers. Layer these folded items over the rolled clothes.

4.Drape longer pieces like pants and skirts
Fold longer items in half, filling the length of the bag with them, alternating waists with hems at the ends.

5.Add smaller items
Fold longer items in half, filling the length of the bag with them, alternating waists with hems at the ends.

6.Line suitcase with belts
Snake belts around the perimeter of the bag. Then cover the whole pile with a dry-cleaning bag. Thanks to the bag’s slippery surface, folded clothes won’t stay in one place long enough for creases to set.

7.Choose shoes wisely
Pick three pairs of shoes, like a casual sandal or loafer, sneakers, and an evening shoe –go for styles that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Wear the heaviest pair en route and pack the others along the sides of your suitcase in resealable bags.

8.Pack your jewelry
Stow inexpensive jewelry in a seven-day plastic pillbox or a 35-millimeter film canister. Wear any fine jewelry en route to ensure it won’t get lost or stolen.

Top Twitter Tips

Silly time waster? Sure. Powerful business tool? You bet.

You've heard about Twitter -- that curious, strangely addictive social-networking technology that facilitates torrents of truncated messages among millions of users. You might even know your hashtags from your re-tweets. But how can you make money with it?

Forbes canvassed scads of businesses and pricey social-networking gurus looking for honest answers. Admittedly, we were skeptical. After all, how much can you accomplish in 140 characters or less?

Turns out there are myriad ways Twitter can have an impact, and not just as a marginal marketing tool. Indeed, we found several clever ways to use Twitter, for everything from boosting sales and scouting talent to conducting market research and raising capital. Chances are there will be many more.

Do You Work Out When You're Sick?

You've seen that girl at the gym. Heck, maybe you are that girl at the gym. Red-nosed, sniffly, sneezy...and hunched over the elliptical machine. You can almost see her sweating out the germs. But does working out when you've got a cold make you sicker--or help you recover faster?

The New York Times recently posed that question to exercise experts. And while research on the topic is scant, there appears to be little harm--and possibly some good!--in working out when you're under the weather.

One study from Ball State University in Indiana found that people with head colds had the same exercise capacity and lung function as healthy subjects. "I was surprised their overall exercise performance wasn't impaired, even though they were reporting feeling fatigued," lead study author Leonard Kaminsky told The New York Times. In another study by Kaminsky, 34 volunteers were infected with a cold virus--sniff! Sixteen of the subjects were told to rest; the others exercised with their colds. Surprisingly, the researchers found no differences in symptoms--or recovery time--between the groups. People in the exercise group even told researchers that being active made them feel better!

It's time to come clean: I'm that girl who goes to the gym when she's sick. (Hey, it takes a lot to shake up my routine!) But I definitely dial back on the intensity when I'm not feeling well--and I bring plenty of antibacterial wipes so I don't leave germs on the equipment!

5 Reasons Why It's a Good Idea to Call in Sick

1. If you wake up feel pretty icky with a sore throat and the sniffles (which weren't there yesterday). Health experts say that the first few hours/days of a virus tend to be the most contagious, so spare your co-workers your germs and keep your sneezy self at home until the following day.

2. If you're taking medications that may (even slightly) impair your ability to do a good job. Whether it's a prescription medication or just over-the-counter cold meds that makes you feel like a space cadet, if the medicine you're taking is impairing you in any way, it's best to stay home.

3. If you have a bad sinus infection. Experts say that sinus infections can cause yellow or green nasal discharge, jaw pain, facial pain, and headaches--all of which are a major blow to concentration. Your best bet? Stay home and use your neti pot, and maybe venture out, but only to see your doctor.

4. If you have pink eye. The majority of "pink eye" is viral and clears up on its own in about 24 to 48 hours. Other cases are bacterial pink eye, and you need antibiotic eye drops from your doc. Both, however, are extremely contagious, so unless you want dirty looks from your office mates, better stay home!

5. Bad back pain. You may feel like a wimp calling in sick because your back hurts, but don't! Experts say sitting at a desk all day can actually aggravate your back and make the pain worse. Instead, after a mega back spasm, spend the day at home taking it easy.

What Your Car Says About You

Porsches smack of success. Hondas preach practicality. And, according to a recent report, Chevys proudly proclaim of their owners, "I don't use the Internet."

Your car implies more about your life than you might think. While 13% of Chevy owners don't use the Web, by contrast, less than 3% of Honda owners remain in the technological Stone Age. The antithesis of flashy, Honda owners are usually pragmatic and well educated; 70% boast a college degree or higher, compared with 35% of Chevy owners and 45% of Ford owners.

The data was released in the spring as part of this year's New Vehicle Experience Study by San Diego-based market research outfit Strategic Vision.

"Honda buyers buy primarily for the trust and dependability they find in our vehicles," says Honda spokesman Chris Naughton. "Typically, highly functional vehicles deliver less image because customers didn't purchase for image."

Education level and computer savvy are just a couple of the things your car says about you. We collected demographic data on 10 prominent auto brands from the manufacturers themselves, as well as from neutral sources like Strategic Vision. It turns out, your wheels also give clues to your age, gender, income level and marital status--even your political leanings.

Mini Mindset
If you'd like to cultivate an image of sophistication, try buying a Mini Cooper. The line of Lilliputian hatchbacks appeals to urbane buyers with median incomes of around $125,000. But aside from wealth, Mini owners are a tough bunch to pin down, demographically speaking, since the car has broad appeal.

"It's a certain mindset," says Nathalie Bauers, spokeswoman for Mini USA. "People who relate to the brand, there's no age to that."

Bauers says Mini owners fall into four categories: brand enthusiasts, who relish the car's British racing roots; design aficionados, who like the car's simple elegance; social butterflies, who want to be part of the Mini community; and gas misers, who crave the Mini's fuel efficiency.

Some of the latter group trade down from trucks and SUVs not because they feel financially crunched by high gas prices, but because they want to be conscientious and reduce their impact on the environment. These "right-sizers" like the Mini's eco-friendly image; all Mini models get at least 34 miles per gallon on the highway. Says Bauers: "Many of our customers are people who get a smaller car because it's the right thing to do."

Gray Area
While Minis appeal to several different types of people, owners of the classic English luxury vehicle Rolls-Royce can't be pigeonholed beyond the fact that they're rich.

"As you can imagine, our customers do not really take surveys," says Rolls-Royce spokeswoman Karen Vonder Meulen. "The one common thread that all our customers share is a passion for life and most truly love cars."

Indeed, well-known Rolls owners range from royal families to rappers. Recording artist T-Pain, who ranks No. 9 on Forbes' Hip-Hop Cash Kings list, owns North America's first Rolls-Royce Drophead. The fire-engine-red coupe boasts a 12-cylinder, 453-horsepower engine and a top speed of 150 miles per hour. Base price: $435,000.

Similarly, the Bentley trademark screams wealth--typically at least $5 million in investable assets, to be precise--but in a softer voice than some of its competitors.

"Our cars aren't as brash as some other performance-car manufacturers," says Stuart McCullough, a Bentley board member. "We tend to be understated, quintessentially English. That reflects the mood and style of our customers."

Such restraint can be considered especially important in the current climate. With unemployment rates skyrocketing around the world, many auto enthusiasts would rather drive an understated gray Bentley than a flashy red Ferrari.

"The most opulent part of a Bentley is on the inside," says McCullough. "Rich people are very aware of how others see them at the moment, the choices they make. Now is not the right time to be seen to be spending money when you're laying people off at your factory."

A note to those wealthy employers: Think twice about splurging on even an understated new car. If you see scads of Hondas in your company parking lot, their savvy owners may be wise to your ways. If you only see Chevys, you might be able to get away with it.
